In the Greek language of the New Testament, the name of Jesus is spelled IESOUS.
When the Greeks transcribed Hebrew names from the Old
Testament, into their own language, they changed the form of those names by
adding a silent “S” to end. For example,
Judah became Judas. Jonah became Jonas. The
names are still pronounced the same, because the “S” is silent. You are
probably more familiar with the French language, which utilizes a similar
device. The French word LES is pronounced LAY. The “S” on the end is silent, as
it also is in the French words rendezvous and debris.
